California here we come …

Don’t let Hannah read that though, because she’s focused on the Canadian part of our two country trip!

We are very lucky to have a great friend in Orange County. Since most Qantas trips to the US tend to land first at LAX, it means we can easily take the opportunity to catch up with Carolyn and also give us a break in what is a long haul from Australia to the the east of North America.

As I write this we are at Sydney airport, with everything to date having gone smoothly (though Len did get picked up at both Canberra and Sydney Airports for the special explosives check. Just lucky I suppose!).  We did have an interesting taxi drive out to the airport with a Sikh driver. He’s been in Australia for five years, 3 in Melbourne and 2 in Canberra. He prefers Melbourne, he said. It’s cheaper and there’s much more to do! Fair enough, there probably is, but there’s more than enough for us to do in Canberra to keep us busy. However, the most interesting part of our conversation was his perspective on Indian politics. He’s not impressed and reckons India needs a revolution. Too many politicians are illiterate he said. Apparently, one of the possible candidates for Prime Minister in the coming elections, is an ex street tea-maker who can’t speak English. How can he speak with other countries, our diver asked, if he can’t speak English. Fair question, we supposed.

Anyhow, back to our trip. So far it looks like the next leg is on time. We will arrive in LA mid-morning (their) Wednesday, pick up our hire car and skedaddle down the freeways out to Yorba Linda where we will spend 5 nights relaxing, catching up with friends, and doing some gentle sightseeing. We love that area and, all being well, hope to do a day trip into the surrounding countryside. We are also looking forward to an Easter brunch with some of Carolyn’s family, including her daughter-in-law whom we are excited to be getting to meet for the first time.

In the meantime, over and out for us. Think of us cooped up in that plane for 15 hours while you go about your respective businesses.

Watch this space …

    • Thanks Trudy … we arrived, but not without some drama as our next post will show. However, I did point out signs to Redondo Beach to Len as we scarpered down the freeways to Carolyn’s place. You were in our minds.

  1. So, even though I subscribed with your first post, I haven’t been getting updates. Weird! Also, you can pretend you’re going mostly for California, but I don’t want to hear a THING about Qantas right now…
