On the road again (figuratively speaking)

Well folks, we are heading off overseas again, after three years of being Australia-bound. Our destination? Somewhere warm, and easy to organise at late notice. In other words, western United States. The first half of our holiday will be new places to us – Seattle and Sacramento – while the second half will be based around our old stamping ground of Southern California, using our good friend Carolyn’s home in Yorba Linda as our base.

Beavertail Cactus, Joshua Tree NP, Spring 2014. It won’t be like this in summer!

Now, we are aware that some of our Aussie friends are wondering why we’d be going to the USA in these interesting times, so we thought we’d clarify this, right here, right now (as people love to say these days). We are going because:

  • we have good friends there that we love to visit;
  • it will be warm (see opening paragraph above);
  • there are still places we haven’t seen that we’d like to (think Chihuly, for a start); and
  • well, they are interesting times so why not experience them first hand?

‘Nuff said?

So, the practicalities … we plan (hope) to write a post (almost) every day to keep in touch with family – but we are very happy for interested friends to follow us too. If you’d like to receive email notifications of our posts as we publish them, please subscribe using the subscription box in the right side-bar. Otherwise, you can just check into the blog randomly using this url (https://wherryonline.com/northamerica2017). Or, you can just ignore this altogether. We won’t know!

You are welcome to check our very basic itinerary (see the Menu Bar). If you have any suggestions, do leave us a message via our Contact Page (also on the Menu Bar).

Finally, we love comments. You can make them through the Comment box at the bottom of each post. Please note though that our comment moderation means that the first time you comment, it won’t appear immediately. However, once we’ve approved it your future comments should display as soon as you submit them. We’ll try to reply promptly … particularly if you ask us a question … but if we don’t, it will be because we are out there having fun, or we’re exhausted and asleep!

  1. Hello Len and Sue,

    Of course, Carter and I are excited about your trip! I love it that you will see Betsy and Phil in Seattle!
    Please do give them my best. They share your love of Joshua Tree, I think and if I remember their family has done
    some rock climbing there!

    Are you driving down the coast when you leave Sacramento? Probably not? I hope you have a wonderful train trip
    from Seattle to Sacramento and a lovely drive from Sacramento to Yorba Linda. I always look forward to your blogs
    no matter where you are going!

    Hope to see you soon….. SO fun to say!

    Take care and enjoy it all.

    Trudy Jayne

    • That’s good to hear! We look forward to seeing you both and the various critters and some flourishing grevilleas too!

    • I will Trudy. We are all lined up for tomorrow. And yes, you’re right re them and Joshua Tree. I think their son got them onto it?

      And no, props by not down the coast given we are aiming for Yorba Linda.

      But now, I must go finalise today’s post. No critters I ‘m afraid. The two birds I took weren’t great… But I’m trying!

  2. Dear Sue and Len,
    All the best for a happy and relaxing trip, and holiday in the sun!
    It’s cool that you are starting the first leg of your journey on American Independence Day too!
    Bon Voyage xx

  3. Never been to Yorba Linda, but my parents went there to visit Dad’s cousin. She was a school teacher and principal there for many years. My parents said that they went for a walk and people greeted Monica in the street effusively, even though she had been retired for many years. My parents enjoyed Yorba Linda!

    • Ah, Neil, do you know which school? Yorba Linda is where we lived for three years on our second USA stint. It’s also the birthplace of Richard Nixon.

  4. Sorry, I don’t know why more. Can’t even recall Monica’s surname, which is buried somewhere in the annals of the family history.

    • Never mind. I suspect it wasn’t the one our kids went to – and it would clearly have been before our time.
