Up, up … and

Ain’t plane travel grand? Our holiday got off to a good start, promptly away from Canberra, courtesy taxi-driver Ian, and on-time landing in Sydney. What could be wrong? It all looked good for a relaxing evening at our airport hotel, but … it was not quite to be. We landed and we sat, and sat, and sat a bit more. For an hour. Turns out the plane in our designated bay had broken down and “the engineers are looking at it. All the other bays are full. Ground control is looking for a solution.”

The solution was to inconvenience one plane a lot, and make us wait, rather than slot us into another bay. So, an hour later, the broken plane, now fixed we presumed, pushed back, and our arrival went smoothly after that. (The baby in the seat behind us behaved remarkable well through it all.)

It was  a balmy 17°C in Sydney, after a chilly departure from Canberra, so it was a pleasant 10-minute walk to our hotel where we had a relaxing, quiet evening, albeit an abbreviated one.  In other words, we missed the Masterchef guaranteed immunity pin cook-off, in beautiful Japan. Wah!

Oh well, coulda been worse.

Now, we are at Sydney airport, having got up at 5.30am … and are looking forward to a smooth, timely flight. See you on the other side.

  1. Isn’t there some saying about travel not being about the destination but about the journey. Well, haven’t you had fascinating ‘travel’ so far! But we hope that is the only experience you have of that type over the next month – and that there are no other such experiences that try to outdo Day One.

    Love from No. 70. Mum.

    • Haha, yes, someone has said that, but hopefully this is not what “they” meant.

  2. Good to hear you made it through the first leg of your trip! I’m sitting here in Nara at Daniel’s place now and wanted to ask you when you will be getting to Yorba Linda? Looking forward to seeing you and have a great time in Washington.

    • Were missing it now, Hannah, as you can’t watch it out of Australia on Ten Play. A shame. Some amazing cooks this season.
